Letters to the Editor: Obama for President

February 01, 2008

Letter to the Editor:

Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg and I were born within a few months of each other.  However, our life experiences were, to say the least, a bit different.  That is why I was gratified to read Ms. Kennedy Schlossberg’s recent NY Times Op Ed piece supporting Barack Obama for President.  I whole-heartedly concur with Ms. Kennedy Schlossberg’s opinion that Barack Obama represents the best hope for the future of all Americans.

Senator Obama is the first presidential candidate in my memory who understands the way to solve the problems of our country is to inspire the people to take responsibility and commit to courses of action that will make our country a better one for future generations.

One small example of this understanding occurred at a recent debate when Senator Obama speaking on the issue of global warming refused to pander to his audience.  He correctly acknowledged that we cannot merely seek to point fingers and blame others for the problem.  We all must focus on modifying our individual behavior to address that issue and once we show such commitment others will follow.

Senator Obama demonstrates that he is aware that he may not be perfect and, more importantly, is strong enough to acknowledge that those who may disagree with him are not all evil and may actually have ideas worthy of consideration.

Senator Obama has demonstrated the ability to forge a coalition that reaches across lines of race, gender and, dare I say it, may even include a few republicans committed to a vision for positive change.

As for the experience factor, I point out for everyone, that about 150 years ago the Republican party was faced with a choice between a politician from Illinois who many claimed lacked the experience of his opponent, a New York politician with vast experience in the ways of Washington, who appeared to be the next in line for his turn as his party’s presidential nominee.

The Republican’s chose the politician from Illinois and the politician from New York, William Seward, became Secretary of State and an ardent supporter of President Abraham Lincoln, the less experienced politician from Illinois.

We, New Yorkers, have an opportunity on February 5th to demonstrate that we can look beyond a vote for a favorite son/daughter and support the right person to lead this country – Vote for Barack Obama on February 5, 2008.
