Letters to the Editor: Scout Appeals for Community Support

January 08, 2008

January 1, 2007

To the Community:

My name is Ian MacDonald. I am 15 years old and a Life Scout from Troop 28 in New Windsor. I am a member of the St. Thomas Youth Group and in the process of competing my Eagle rank, the highest rank in scouting. I am completing my Eagle project this month under very personal circumstances and I am asking for your help and assistance.

This past summer, both my father and grandfather were diagnosed with incurable cancers. My grandfather was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. He is 69 years old. Less than six weeks later, my father, Edward, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma stage 3 with metastatic lytic disease that has spread to his bones. He is 50 years old. My father is currently undergoing high dose chemotherapy in preparation for a stem cell transplant next month.

For my Eagle project, in honor of both my father and my grandfather, I am organizing a blood drive, a bone marrow donor drive and a Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday, January 26, 2008 from 9am to 3pm at the Salisbury Mills firehouse on Rt.94 where my father is a volunteer firefighter and EMT. Cancer advocacy organizations are participating in this event by providing information and educational materials to be distributed to patrons who attend the blood drive and Cancer Awareness Day. The National Bone Marrow Donor Program will also be on hand for anyone who would like to add their name to the bone marrow registry program. The program allows a cancer patient who needs a bone marrow transplant to be matched with a potential life saving donor.

I NEED YOUR HELP!!!! My goal for the blood drive is over 150 pints and the ALYK machine will be on hand. It is a machine that collects red blood cells that are given specifically to cancer patients and counts as two blood donations. Please register to donate blood at this drive and consider registering for the bone marrow registry. If you cannot donate blood, please come to the Cancer Awareness Day and pick up important information about many different types of cancers. Please pass this on to your family members, employees and colleagues and encourage them to be a donor at this blood drive. I sincerely appreciate your help and participation in making my Eagle project a success. To sign up to give blood, please email me at [email protected] with your name and phone number and the time you would like to give blood in 15 minute slots (9:15, 9:30 etc.) Thank you for supporting me in this very personal project.

Sincerely,
Ian MacDonald.
Life Scout, Troop 28

Comments:

I tried your web site and it didn't work. Which blood service is doing the collection?
