Police Blotter: October 22-28, 2007

Monday, October 22
12:46 p.m.  Police respond to an accident on Mine Hill Road where a front-end loader damaged a utility pole.

1:37 p.m.  Police take a report of a bus driver who closed the door while a parent was speaking about safety concerns.

3:17 p.m.  Police work with the school district to address the issue of a subject who had trespassed repeatedly at Willow Avenue elementary school.  The school district issues a letter telling the subject he is not allowed on school property, which is delivered by police chief Hazard.

7:38 p.m.  Police take a report from a woman who says she placed her purse on a picnic table in the town park to play with her kids and when she returned her purse was gone.

7:38 p.m.  Police exercise an arrest warrant for criminal mischief against Ismet Gjonbalaj, 39, of Cornwall.

7:38 p.m.  Police respond to a complaint about harassing instant messages that began with an argument about baseball and escalated into threatening statements.


Tuesday, October 23
8:39 a.m.  Police respond to a report of a deer that was struck by a motor vehicle and dispatch the injured animal.

5:39 p.m.  Police issue a summons for an expired inspection sticker to a vehicle during a safety check on Route 32.

6:22 p.m.  Police assist with a mentally ill subject at the Cornwall hospital emergency room.

7:45 p.m.  Police respond to a possible domestic dispute and respond to a report that a subject had removed items of value, including DVDs,  a video game player, and video games, without permission.

10:25 p.m.  Police come upon a motor vehicle accident on Brewster Rd. while on patrol.


Wednesday, October 24
8:00 a.m.  Police issue an arrest warrant on Angel Garcia, 31, of Ellenville,  on a felony charge of possession of stolen property greater than $50,000.  Arrest in the case of steel panels stolen in Newburgh and abandoned on a trailer in Cornwall earlier in the week.

10:45 a.m.  Police respond to a disturbance at Dunkin Donuts involving a 53-year-old male customer from Cornwall who states he walked up to the counter to make a purchase and an employee was sweeping in front of the counter.  The customer states he told the “rag head” to get the **** out of the way and the employee refused.  The customer then argued with the manager and left the store.  

Police spoke to the manager, who is Indian, and the victim, who has a Muslim name.  The victim says he was sweeping when the customer came up and told him to get the **** out of the way.  The victim/employee then told him to get the **** out of his way and the customer slapped him in the head, knocking his hat off and on to the ground.

The victim says he did not want to press charges and the manager says he does not want to customer in his business any more.   The customer says he would take his business elsewhere.  A letter will be drawn up by the chief stating such to both parties.

5:09 p.m.  Police issue a summons for driving 59 mph in a 40 mph zone on Angola Road to a 37-year-old male from Maybrook.

8:40 p.m.  Police respond to a motor vehicle accident on Angola Road.

9:14 p.m.  Polcie respond to a domestic dispute.


Thursday, October 25
10:29 a.m.  Police issue a summons for a vehicle and traffic violation to a 20-year-old female from Irving.

12:47 p.m.  Police respond to a report of larceny from a residence involving family members.

1 p.m.  Police respond to a report of kids driving motor scooters in the roadway recklessly and advise them not to ride scooters in the roadway.

3:10 p.m.  Police respond to a report of skateboarders in the parking lot at Cornwall plaza and advise them to be on their way.

3:23 p.m.  Police take a report of a dispute among neighbors.

8:53 p.m.  Police respond to Cornwall hospital to a request to assist with a taser.  Subject insisted on leaving the hospital and he was screaming and making threats to the staff.  Permission to leave was given to him by the doctor and he left the area.

11:12 p.m.  Police issue a summons for an uninspected motor vehicle to a 31-year-old male from Newburgh.


Friday, October 26
9:50 a.m.  Police take a harassment complaint from a business owner regarding a customer’s irate behavior.

12:04 p.m.  Police issue a summons for speeding on Route 9W to a 35-year-old male from Washingtonville.

4:34 p.m.  Police take a harassment complaint from a woman who said a teenage male driving a black Saturn had yelled verbal obscenities at her on two occasions.

5:08 p.m.  Police respond to a motor vehicle accident on Route 32 with little to no damage.

5:55 p.m.  Police respond to a report of harassing phone calls by the ex-wife of a woman’s boyfriend.

6:28 p.m.  Police respond to a motor vehicle accident on Gregory Stevens Drive.

7:42 p.m.  Police take a report of fraud by a family member who is believed to be forging names on checks and cashing them.  Subject is advised to close his bank account and get photo copies of the check deposits.

8:25 p.m.  Police take a report from a subject who lost his wallet at the Gamestop Store on Main Street.  It was last seen in the jacket of his pocket. It had $50 in cash, a $100 gift card and other items in it.  The store was searched by the owner with negative results.


Saturday, October 27
7:01 a.m.  Police respond to a report of a 29-year-old woman who had attempted to commit suicide by taking pain relievers and anti-depressants.  She is taken to the Cornwall hospital by COVAC.

11:10 a.m.  Police issue a summons for driving 43 mph in a 30 mph zone on Quaker Avenue to a 41-year-old male from Central Valley.

1:51 p.m.  Police respond to a call of two vehicles abandoned on the top of Route 218.  Officer checks the vehicles and used loudspeaker to notify the owners that Route 218 would be closing within the next ten minutes.  There was no response from the owners and NY DOT continued to close down Route 218 with the vehicles parked inside.

6:15 p.m.  Police respond to a report of a subject possibly bleeding from lacerations.  Upon arrival resident refuses to allow police to gain entry to residence, open door and advises that she was ok, (blood is visible on the neck and arm area).  After repeated requests to open the door, the subject allows the police and EMS inside.  She is extremely intoxicated and admits to drinking alcohol excessively.  Officer observes several disposal razors in the bathroom.  Subject has no explanation for the lacerations on her arm but advises she needs help and wants to go to the hospital and is transported there.

7:04 p.m.  Police speak with male subject/boyfriend of the woman from previous incident and advise him.

11:02 p.m.  Police respond to a complaint of an animal barking in an apartment but unable to make contact with the owner.


Sunday, October 28
1:00 a.m.  Police arrest two 17-year-old males from Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson and charge them with petty larceny.  See story.

8:51 a.m.  Police issue a summons for speeding on Route 9W to a 54-year-old male from Gardiner.

9:23 a.m.  Police issue a summons for speeding on Route 9W to a 37-year-old female from Newburgh.

12:27 p.m.  Police respond to a report of a Toyota Highlander that was keyed while parked in the victim’s driveway at her residence.

5:18 p.m.  Police issue a summons for a vehicle and traffic violation on Route 94 to a 22-year-old male from Rock Tavern.

5:26 p.m.  Police issue a summons for an expired license to a 26-year-old female.

6:21 p.m.  Police arrest 41-year-old Joan Vasquez  of Central Valley,  for driving with a suspended license and also issue a summons for speeding on Route 9W.

6:24 p.m.  Police respond to a domestic dispute between a married couple in the process of divorcing.
