Letters to the Editor: Let's get civil again

August 07, 2007

To the Editor:

Take a minute.

Maybe…just maybe…it might improve the quality of the
way we communicate in this Village we all call home (and I think
it needs some help).

I refer specifically to comments placed recently on the Cornwall-on-Hudson newsletter website by ‘Cap’t. Bob’.

The writer is, of course, entitled to his opinion; most of
us have no end of opinions. Me, too.

But there are three things that concern me about this type
of public anger:

1- The writer, (Fire?) Cap’t. Bob, almost certainly lets his pals
know who he is, yet masks his full identity behind a nickname
that most residents outside the Company club don’t know.

2- Then he says, “Live near a firehouse, wail about the sirens.”
Perhaps Cap’t Bob thinks of those he demeans as ‘whiners’.
But that misses the real point. It’s more than a matter of simple if
noisy inconvenience for those people who live close to the siren.
Or near a pre-dawn dumpster pick-up site. Or just above the
railroad tracks. It has to do with the potential of health dangers.

3- And most disappointing of all is Cap’t. Bob’s suggestion that
anyone who is concerned about these health issues and would
like to see them solved, should, “…move!!”. What is more, he
caps his communication with, “Good Riddance!!”. Is he calling
for a mass exodus of residents impacted by the sirens along
Maple Ave. and other nearby streets? Or of those who live on
Duncan Ave? Or of those who live along Grandview Ave? And does he really honestly believe that the Village would be a better place without all these folks?

Bottom Line: when an individual’s narrowly focused personal
antagonism over something (or someone) he dislikes or disagrees with turns into an invitation for his Village neighbors who disagree with him to get out of town and good riddance, we’ve reached a low
in civility and thoughtfulness in our community that corrodes far beyond the issues mentioned above.

Let’s take a minute to think about what we’re saying.
Let’s get civil again.

Comments:

Hooray for Lee Murphy. Might I add that with him comes a bonus - his wife,Jaci. As members of our community, they GIVE their time, they SHARE their intelligence and, best of all, they EMBRACE this village where we all live in order to make it a better place...for us and for our children.
Change is part of growth but, unfortunately, human nature resists in favor of the least common denominator....status quo.
Thanks to Lee, Deke and Joe for your contributions and your vision.

Fire alarm is not only important to the firefighters but the citizens as well. I would not want to be caught off guard while the volunteers are rushing to the firehouse. The volunteers are an important fabric to our village. Lets not make their response an issue.
However a compromise in having two lower decibel alarms or having the higher decibel in a remote location may satisfy both parties. As for the 5oclock alarm I would rather hear church bells........
