Letters to the Editor: Viable Choices on the Ballot!

March 15, 2007

March 15, 2007

Dear Editor:

Residents of the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson (yes, we are “hyphen” people) are being offered a rare gift this spring…viable choices on the election ballot when they vote on Tuesday, March 20th from Noon til 9PM at the Village Hall.

Having owned our Cliffside Park home for some 20 years now we have seen, in the past, decent local government under the paternalistic care of Mayor Ed Moulton. Of late, our village has been overwhelmed with quality-of-life and financial issues.  It was discouraging to attend the annual budget meeting and hear vague responses from someone who has been at the monetary helm for 26 years.  How did we end up with a multi-million dollar debt load without citizen consent or referendum? Why did we have to drag ourselves out to countless night meetings to protest various construction and road projects that were foisted upon us by a select few?

Attending the “Meet the Candidates” forum last Friday evening solidified our belief that the time has come for change in our village government.  Mr. Joe Gross presents a welcome breath of fresh air, new eyes and ideas on a list of challenges facing the village at this time.  We feel it is time to give Joe Gross, a life-long resident, an opportunity to serve as mayor for the next two years.  His experience as building contractor, former Planning Board member and environmental volunteer are areas of expertise that will benefit the village and its residents.  Rick Gioia and Charlie Moore are trustee candidates who seem very willing and dedicated to effect positive change and should be given the opportunity to serve the village as well.

Finally, we would like to thank all the village candidates for running such a positive, dignified and cost-conscious campaign in an era of dirty and expensive politics.

Respectfully,
Frank & Susan Ostrander
Cornwall-on-Hudson
