Letters to the Editor: Tax Breaks for Veterans

May 17, 2017

I have a hard time believing that seniors who struggle to survive have to think about moving to another state due to continuous tax increases. Many of whom have paid taxes most of their lives. There are some states that treat their seniors much better, especially combat veterans who were called to serve our nation at a very young age. We came home with horrific memories of war and close buddies that arrived home in body bags. States like Georgia and Florida for example give their veterans huge school and property tax breaks. A combat 100% disabled veteran like myself pay ZERO TAXES IN THESE STATES. What a disgrace New York is along with Cornwall's continuous outrageous taxes. Take care of your vets and law enforcement officers who protect the citizens of Cornwall and your(not so) educated spoiled offspring as well. We served our country when called at a moments notice without question so future generations could enjoy the safest and greatest country on the face of the earth. I voted for Brian Billard because he believes in my above aforementioned statement regarding increased tax breaks for veterans and disabled combat veterans. I can go on forever especially if the topic is about Brain Washed Big Libs and the fringed leftwing that is destroying this nation... Thank you.

Comments:

I was a long-time resident of CoH who left NY as soon as I retired due to high taxes and the corrupt state government. I was in a car pool with 5 other people, and we have all retired now. Five of us moved out of NY immediately. Many of my new friends in North Carolina moved here from NY State as well. NY State is going to find out what happens when they run out of other people's money. I live in Tryon, NC, a village in the mountains of Western NC that is exactly like CoH, but with better weather, much lower taxes and friendly people. I saved $10,000/yr. on property taxes alone. Do not be afraid to seek a better retirement life elsewhere. You will not be disappointed.

I'm a veteran too, but I grew up in San Diego. After living in Southern California, Northern Virginia, DC, Maryland, New Jersey, Georgia, and several places overseas I chose to retire in Cornwall-on-Hudson and love it. The property taxes are a little steep, but not as high as Westchester. I am grateful for the property tax breaks I get as a veteran and I am especially grateful that New York does not tax my military pension! But the best things about Cornwall are the natural beauty and the terrific people.
