Dear Editor:
I want to share with you the following as there is a lot of decision making happening re: our river front.
While assisting with the Science Fair project of my 5th grader at St. Thomas, Air Pollution and it's Effects on Global Warming, I became aware of some alarming statistics;
We live in one of the top 10% of the most dirty and polluted regions in the NATION. [email protected] was our source. I was stunned, especially as you view our village from the riverfront.
It is now my position that any riverfront plan be GREEN. No big sightseeing, fossil fuel burning tourist vessels, docking, fueling etc. In fact, I believe we should strictly limit pleasure craft that burn fossil fuels to residents who pay a HIGH permit fee to discourage that type of craft.
Sailing, windsurfing, electric fishing craft, canoes and kyacks etc. would be encouraged.
With the oil/gas refineries a mere mile or two up river, with documented spills, (see 2/6/07 Times Herald Record) we are already paddling upstream (pardon the pun).
