Letters to the Editor: A Letter from Joseph Gross on Mayoral Bid

January 7, 2007

Dear Friends,
Cornwall-on-Hudson is a small and beautiful place with some 3,000 people living on two square miles and surrounded by woods and water. It
is steeped in history and on the fringe of the greatest city in the world. For those of us who work locally, it can be easy to forget that
there's another world out there. The houses are close together, the roads are narrow, and we can't help but know what is happening in the
neighborhoods. We can walk or ride a bicycle anywhere in the Village and feel as if we are in some other place, back in time and far from
civilization.

For those of us who were born here, it is hard to forget the memories of our lives and what this place was like in the past. We see it as the children we were and the adults we are. We cherish those thoughts and it profoundly affects the way we look at life. It can be hard for us to accept the change that comes to our Village, but it is inevitable.

People need a safe place to live with considerate neighbors and dependable services. We want to preserve what's left of our landscape and ensure that what is built is compatible with what is here. We want to improve what we have and maintain it without depriving our neighbors of the same. We want to savor every piece of it for as long as we can. We want to pass it on to the next generations and we hope that they too, will treat it with repsect. It is a fine balance among preservaton, conservation, development, and change. It is not easily resolved and it often pits neighbor against neighbor. It is the march of civilization and we are in it's path. We can't get out of it's way but we can stand firm for what we hold dear to us.

We need to have honest dialogue about what it is that makes Cornwall on Hudson unique. It is imperative that every opinion be heard. It is imperative that our Village Government give us all facts and figures in a timely fashion. This is our home and it is our responsibility to be a part of this process. After much thought, over the past many months, I have decided that it is my obligation to sit at the table where all of our voices will be heard. I am asking for your support as the next Mayor of Cornwall-on-Hudson.

Sincerely,
Joseph J. Gross
