Letters to the Editor: Mayor's Legacy: Poor Planning and Debt

March 13, 2007

To the Editor:

As I see it, the hallmarks of Mayor Moulton's administration these past 10 years have been a lack of planning and poor fiscal decisions. This unfortunate combination has led our village into exorbitant debt (some 8 million dollars), undesirable policies and some distressing results. The new water filter plant is an example of the consequences of poor planning and fiscal irresponsibility. Despite the presence of an Engineer on the Board and having crack legal counsel on the payroll, the village entered into a half-baked plan that was not fully thought out, adequately contracted or properly financed.

This pattern of taking action without sufficient planning continues, as evidenced by the Board's recent admission that they had no plan in place when they commanded residents to remove mature landscaping on village property. In addition, no consideration had been given to how the village would replace the function that these plantings provided! Or where the money would come from to make these replacements. Fortunately, alert and caring citizens brought this folly to the Board's attention and the demands were "tabled," with a promise to involve the community in creating a Plan before continuing with this hasty action.

The government of the village has become complacent and myopic. It is time for fresh leadership, and we have this year, a wonderful opportunity to elect Joe Gross, whose lifelong experience in the village makes him a highly qualified and immensely desirable candidate for the office of Mayor.

We also have two good candidates running for seats on the Board. Rick Gioia is a highly intelligent and dedicated resident, who is committed to fiscal responsibility, while maintaining the character of the village that we love so much. I know less about Charlie Moore, but from what I have heard, it is my belief that he is committed to helping create a more open and functional government for our village.
