My name is Lucy Mercado, founder of Support Our Heroes Foundation since 2004. I am seeking for help, making this Christmas special for our military. I started the foundation when my son Luis Mercado, Jr. was stationed overseas in Iraq in 2004 . Luis asked if I can mail extra items for those who didn't receive any packages or mail, due to not having family members or other reasons. You can imagine that I cannot afford to mail items to 312 men in women. At that point I asked my friends , family and neighbors for help, everyone was very supportive. This was the only thing keeping me sane when my son was overseas, not knowing if he would return.
Presently I have 4 platoons in Afghanistan. My most recent platoon 1 of the guys are from New Windsor, I mail packages every 7 to 10 days. When one platoon returns I adopt another.
I am trying to reach out to our community, not to forget our sons and daughters sacrificing their lives for us. When we are home safe and warm with our love ones, they are missing their family, and the life they once took for granted. Just because there are not being mentioned in the news doesn't mean that we are not losing our loved ones.
It means a lot to them, when they receive a package or letter from us letting them know that they are not forgotten, and they are appreciated. I am reaching out to everyone for help and support. In total I have around 300 men and women who I send items to. I need help to purchase certain items, and for shipping. I am trying to prepare special boxes now for Christmas, but I cannot do it alone.
