On Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at approximately 1:30am, the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Department, Town of Cornwall Police Department, Storm King Engine Fire Company and Cornwall Volunteer Ambulance all responded to the area of Shore Road, Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y., for a reported Car versus Train motor- vehicle accident.
Upon further investigation it was discovered that a female vehicle operator, Lisa Castanon, age 44, of Wappinger Falls, N.Y., while traveling southbound on Shore Road, failed to bear left at a CSX Railroad Crossing and her vehicle got stuck on the CSX railroad tracks/ gravel, it was further reported that Ms. Castanon exited her vehicle but then went back into her vehicle to get her cell phone at which time a northbound CSX Train arrived at listed location and struck Ms. Castanon’s 2002’ Hyundai Accent, the CSX Train “pushed” Ms. Castanon’s vehicle approximately 70 feet north of the vehicles’original location. Ms. Castanon was able to physically crawl out of her vehicle which then proceeded to catch fire a short time later subsequently becoming totally engulfed in flames.
Ms. Castanon was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, N.Y., where she was treated for serious injuries. Ms. Castanon is currently in serious but stable condition at Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, N.Y. Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Department conducted a further police investigation where it was determined that Ms. Castanon had been operating her vehicle while in an intoxicated condition at the time of the motor- vehicle accident. Ms. Castanon was subsequently arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated and is due back in Cornwall Justice Court on December 17, 2015 at 5:00pm
Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Department and CSX Railroad are continuing their investigations.
