General Outdoors: Moodna Creek Watershed Management Plan

(The following is a document published by the Orange County Water Authority)

The Orange County Water Authority is collaborating with the Orange County Planning Department to develop a Watershed Management Plan for the Moodna Creek watershed, which includes parts of 22 towns and villages in Orange County. We are encouraging all municipalities and interested organizations in the watershed to be a part of this important process, which will involve outreach to stakeholder groups such as businesses, educators, sportsmen, developers, builders, governmental agencies, environmental organizations, and others. This project is funded in part by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s Hudson River Estuary Program.

An important tributary of the Hudson River, the Moodna Creek is one of Orange County’s largest rivers. The Moodna drains almost _ of the county’s land area and is identified in the County’s Open Space Plan as a Selected Priority Watershed. The Moodna Creek watershed management plan will include a detailed assessment of the watershed’s natural resources as well as key issues affecting communities, organizations and other stakeholders in the watershed. The plan will recommend actions that can be taken by local government, residents, developers and other stakeholders to protect and enhance the watershed.

Priority topics for the plan will be identified through a public participation process and through meetings with municipal leaders, organizations, and citizens. These topics are expected to include:
∑ drinking water
∑ recreation and public access
∑ fisheries, wildlife and other biodiversity issues
∑ flood prevention and mitigation
∑ open space protection
∑ stormwater management and erosion control
∑ potential for intermunicipal projects to meet infrastructure needs for drinking water, stormwater, and wastewater

In meetings of the project Advisory Committee, we will be prioritizing key issues and seeking support from municipal leaders and other participants for the research, outreach, and other tasks to be completed as part of the planning process. We need to hear what is important to you and your community. Please share this notice with elected and appointed officials who may be interested in participating in this planning process.
