For anyone interested in Islamic Studies, I happened upon a lecture
delivered at St. Mary's College in San Antonio, TX by Col. Patrick Lang, who
in my opinion, is well vetted: Green Beret Viet Nam combat vet, DIA operations analyst in the Middle East for a number of years, counterterrorism adviser to Pres. G.H.W. Bush, fluent in Arabic and former Professor of Arabic at USMA. The lecture is "History and Varieties of Islam". I learned that I don't know what I think I know. There are several seminal and basic tenets of Islamic culture of which I was ignorant. If you wish, have a look and see what you feel. The knowledge I gained objectively defused some of the fear I from time to time feel about "the real bad guys" and put into perspective the entire shifting culture, especially vis a vis our current government's aims. The objectivity with which I felt the material is presented aids me in being clear as opposed to vague, confused, reactionary and afraid.
