Cornwall Hospital was put on lockdown Sunday morning after a patient came in who had traveled abroad had strange symptoms. The patient also had an unknown powdery substance on his belongings that he traveled back to New York with.
The hospital was reopened after it was determined that there was no threat.
St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital issued the following statement:
"A patient presented to St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital's Cornwall campus Emergency Department earlier today, showing symptoms of upper respiratory trouble. The patient had recently traveled abroad and brought with them a powder-like substance. Cornwall Emergency Staff immediately connected with local fire and police departments, who worked with the Orange County Hazardous Materials team to investigate. The Cornwall Emergency Department was placed under temporary lock down during the investigation to ensure safety for all patients, visitors and staff. The thorough investigation concluded that the powder was a non-hazardous material. Thank you to our local First Responders, Fire, Police, Orange County Hazardous Materials team, and SLCH staff for their work today. At this time, the Emergency Department is back to its normal operation."
