Obituaries: Abby S. Mayer

 Abby S. Mayer, of Cornwall entered into eternal rest on May 9, 2014 at St. Lukes Cornwall Hospital. He was 85 years old. The son of Morris Mayer and Lee Solomon Mayer, Abby was born on July 6, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY.

Abby S. Mayer earned his Master's degree from New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and Master's Professional degree from Columbia University. Abby was a retired musician with USMA Band at West Point, NY.

Abby S. Mayer honorably and proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1976.

A family statement reads: "Abby Mayer had a passion for music centered on the French Horn and teaching. Enduring love for Marianne, his wife for 59 years. He also had a family that extended beyond all boundaries where friends were as close as ordinary kin. His spirit transcended to all with no constraints or prejudices. He was truly a renaissance man that was a shining example worth emulating. No amount of words can express his love for others and ours for him. He will be greatly missed with his legacy living on through all that knew him. "

Abby S. Mayer is survived by his wife, Marianne Soller Mayer at home; sons, Abby Sigfried Mayer and his wife, Linda of Mendham, NJ and Lyle Mayer and his wife, Ria of New York, NY; an Aunt Mayer; cousins, Peter Drew and Raleigh Mayer; a 2nd cousin, Jessica McGorman; grandchildren, Emily and Dan Mayer. He was predeceased by his brother, Lloyd Mayer.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY 12520. A service will be held at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening, May 13, 2014 at the funeral home. Burial with Military Honors will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at USMA Cemetery at West Point, NY.

A beautiful graveside service for Abby Mayer yesterday at West Point Ceremony, with full Military Honors and the US Army Band. Fitting for a wonderful man.
