Three years ago, Hudson Valley Summer Stage performed its last musical at the Walter Reade, Jr. Theatre at Storm King School. Audience members and performers still recall those shows, particularly 2011’s production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, with an abiding fondness and reverence. Founding director Karen Eremin closed the doors on HVSS when her daughter Franny began her college search.
Thanks to the ardent perseverance of former campers and overwhelming support of friends in the community, the two-week theatre day camp intensive is back this summer with a full-length production of the Broadway Musical Hairspray. Step It Up Summer Stage is now a division of Step It Up Productions thanks to Ronda Barber, owner and Artistic Director the Step by Step Dance Studio in Cornwall-on-Hudson. Summer Stage’s production team remains essentially unchanged with Eremin directing, assisted by T.J. Larke and Max Finkelstein as Musical Director. This year, Barber will be producing rather than choreographing, so filling her role for this dance-heavy show will be R.J. Miller of Newburgh.
Camp runs from 10am-3pm Monday through Friday, beginning June 30th, with a few late days the week of July 7th to make up for the 4th of July holiday. Rehearsals begin at Barber’s studio located at 237 Hudson Street and move to Cornwall Central High School July 9th, where two shows will be performed Friday and Saturday evenings, July 11th and 12th at 7pm. Tuition for the two week program is $585.00 and is open to students ages 12-18. As a non profit 501(c)3 organization, Step It Up Productions will be providing five full camp scholarships, based on auditions to be held in June.
