From The Cornwall Public Library
Sunday, April 27th will be remembered as a very special day in the lives of several young people whose original poems were named “best” in Cornwall Public Library’s 10th Annual Timothy Mumford Memorial Poetry Competition. Most of the winners were present and read their poems to a most appreciative audience, after which they received their awards during a special ceremony that took place at 3:00 p.m. in the library’s community room. The poet whose poem, “Concrete Jungle”, was selected as best overall poem for the competition was unable to be present, but sent the next best thing – a DVD of him reading his poem which achieved a solid round of applause from an appreciative audience. Following the ceremony everyone enjoyed a reception hosted by the FRIENDS of Cornwall Library.
54 original poems submitted by 49 children and youth ages 5-18 were read and critiqued by three independent judges - John Kelly, Sharon Thomson, and Elissa Zahn - who had no knowledge of the authors other than their ages. The judges conferred with one another to arrive at a unanimous decision regarding best poem in each category, and best overall poem.
The 2014 winners are:
Ages 5-6 – Luba Ferencecych, age 6 Poem: “Yummy Nature”
Ages 7-8-9 – Casey Steiner, age 8 Poem: “Special Gifts”
Ages 7-8-9 – Christina Sorce, age 9 Poem: “Conversations with my Grandfather”
Ages 16-17-18 – Miriam Sefcikova, age 16 Poem: “Poison”
Ages 16-17-18 – Sarah Giardina, age 16 Poem: “To Wish on Paper Birds”
Best Overall Poem – Liam Van Horn, age 18 Poem: “Concrete Jungle”
