The Hawk Drilling Company crew that is remediating contamination due to a chlorinated solvent released by an old dry cleaners on the site will be working and drilling in the parking lot for about another 2 weeks, give or take a couple of days at the site, as of March 7th.
The underground soil at parts of the Plaza has been contaminated with chlorinated solvents that escaped from an old defunct dry cleaner that was located at the site, and the solvents can contaminate the underground water table.
Per the crew, the normal deterioration rate of the solvents is about 30 years, but the injected fluids decrease that to approximately 5 years.
Per the crew, they have drilled 117 out of a proposed 200+, 15 foot deep bore holes, on site into which under pressure they inject a liquid mixture that contains a solution of emulsified vegetable oil and water.
The crew also drilled 3 horizontal wells that run a distance of, on average, 180 feet under the DeCicco Family Market from north-east to south-west also into which they pump liquid solution, that is harmless.
After the bore holes are drilled and the solution injected they are capped and that section of the parking area is then reopened.
The DEC is overseeing the process.
Comments:
Nice that DEC is overseeing. Who's paying for it?
