General News: Police Warn Public of Fraudulent Calls
from Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Chief Steve Dixon
Recently several local residents in the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y., have received anonymous calls from a male subject claiming that their child/ family member was involved in motor- vehicle accident and that there was heavy vehicle damage sustained and their child/ family member was injured. The unknown male went on to say that his brother was the other vehicle operator and was also a gang member and that he took their child hostage and was demanding money for their release. During these incidents the victim(s) were able to make contact with their prospective family member and discovered this to be a hoax.
To this date approximately (3) three separate Cornwall-on-Hudson residents have received this type of fraudulent call. Several other surrounding police agencies have also reported that residents in their municipalities have also received these types of calls.
It is suggested to residents to immediately hang up in the event you receive this type of phone call and to report same to the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Police Department. Both this Agency along with other surrounding agencies are actively investigating these incidents.
