General News: Transformer Fire at Woodbury Commons
By Jim Lennon
On Tuesday afternoon June 11th there was an active electrical transformer fire at the Woodbury Commons Premium Outlets.
The Woodbury Common management was made aware of electrical problems in five stores and an odor of something burning about one hour before reported fire.
The Management contacted Orange & Rockland and the utility responded and began inspecting a large above ground enclosed transformer, and during their examination the transformer burst into flames.
At 2:44pm O&R personnel requested a fire department response, whereupon Commons personnel notified Orange County Emergency Communications 911 Center who did then immediately dispatched the Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department.
Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department responded with 2 Engines, 1 Ladder and a Rescue, and staged and stood by on scene, checking to insure that there was no extension or high carbon monoxide levels present in adjacent areas.
O&R personnel cut electrical power to the transformer and the Woodbury Fire Department stretched a line/hose and cooled down the transformer, then took up and departed the scene at 3:32pm when the incident was declared under control.
There was no physical damage to any structure and no smoke or water damage.
Monroe Volunteer Fire Department was on standby in their quarters.
Orange County Fire Coordinator 36-13 Charlie Piper responded.
No injuries were sustained.
Five stores that were fed power by the transformer were impacted with loss of electrical power.
O&R remained on scene with several trucks and personnel to try to rectify the situation.
