Despite Mother Nature’s soaking rains prior to April 13, Cornwall Little League’s 63rd Opening Day went off without a hitch on Saturday.
The parade route was lined with families and well-wishers as the 2012 CCHS Varsity Baseball team, all former Cornwall Little League players, led the parade from Town Hall to the Major League field. John Carnright, President of the Cornwall Little League, led the Opening Day festivities, which included “The Star Spangled Banner” sung by Valerie Ransbottom and the Cornwall Singers and the vocal talents of CCHS Freshman, Jeremy Palermo, as he sang “God Bless the USA.”
The Volunteer Board of Directors stood on the third baseline while on the first baseline stood representatives from government, the school district and local law enforcement agencies, as well as the 2012 NYS Championship Varsity Baseball Team. Words of encouragement and wisdom spoken by James Skoufis and Kevin Hines were followed by a rousing rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” led by COH Mayor Brendan Coyne. Christian Lopez, a former Cornwall Little Leaguer who gained notoriety last year when he caught, and returned, Derek Jeter’s 3000th hit baseball was also in attendance.
Six players representing the various softball and baseball divisions threw out the ceremonial first pitches, which marked the official start to the little league season. The Cornwall Little League extends its wishes for a season of team work and baseball and softball fun!
