To the Editor:
There's an appalling letter on here from Trustee Gosda and her running mate Jan Smith. In it, and in some posters placed around the village, they make it seem that Trustee Jim Kane is ripping off the NYS retirement system. Specifically, they say that he seems to be claiming too many hours and implying that he is stealing from the village and state.
It turns out that benefits are calculated using a variety of formulae. The calculations are based on average pay (http://www.osc.state.ny.us/retire/members/) - as they have to be, since there are so many salaried employees. I don't know where he stands in retirement system- it's fairly complex. However, a cursory look shows that the numbers reported on his behalf don't even help with eligibility- you need to make more than minimum wage to for the hours to mean anything. Repeating falsehoods over and over doesn't make them true.
