Firefighters struggled to control the fire at the building housing Superior Packaging.
Thick black smoke poured from the building.
Piles of debris spill out the doors of Superior Packaging as the fire rages on the roof.
The smoke covered most of Cornwall, as seen in this photo taken on Ridge Road.
A four-alarm fire is engulfing the building that is home to Superior Packaging at 2 Mill Street Sunday morning. The building is located in the rear of the Cornwall Industrial Park, along Moodna Creek
The fire was reported around 10:30 am and two and half hours later firefighters from throughout the area are still trying to extinguish the flames shooting out of the roof of the building complex. Ashes floated down throughout the area but the fire did not appear to have touched several other buildings at the same address, including the old Firth Carpet Mill.
A man who asked not to be identified said he was at Superior Packaging this morning to pick up barrels around 10a when he saw flames on the roof of the building. Other workers in that building left as well, he said.
The building had been flooded by Tropical Storm Irene in August, leaving mounds of soaked paper goods throughout the site. The large warehouse structure is 300,000 square feet and there are at least six other businesses that operate from the structure in addition to Superior Packaging.
