General News: Christmas Tree Lightings on Sunday
|
Michael Kelly will be the ceremonial tree lighter this year. He is seen here after the 2010 NYC Marathon with his daughter Jennie. |

The village tree decked out for the holidays. |
The holiday season is here and that means it’s time for the annual tree lighting ceremonies. This past Sunday, members of the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce could be seen setting up the decorations at Chadeayne Circle, where the lights will be turned on this Sunday, December 4, at 6 pm. The Cornwall Middle School band members will entertain the crowd with holiday music before the lighting.
Cornwall native Michael Kelly will be the ceremonial tree lighter this year in recognition of his efforts to raise funds for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Kelly, who has Parkinson’s, recently completed his second New York City Marathon and, with the help of his family, has organized the Riverview Run for Parkinson’s that has raised more than $30,000 for the cause.
The Chamber donated $500 for the Parkinson’s Research foundation and provided another check for $500 to the Cornwall Fire Department, which devotes some 40 hours of labor and ladder truck time to string the lights for the festivities at Chadeayne Circle.
Village Tree Lighting
The Mayor of Cornwall-on-Hudson traditionally lights the village’s towering spruce tree next to the gazebo at 5:30 pm on the first Sunday in December and, this year, tradition will reign.
The tree lighting will be followed by the arrival of Santa Claus on the back of a fire truck, which will bring the jolly old elf to the Storm King Fire Engine Co. firehouse on Hudson Street where he will listen to the wishes of children. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served.

"Holiday Tree"?? What holiday are we talking about...4th of July? Who would we be offending if we called it what it is....a Christmas Tree!

Its a CHRISTMAS tree. Everyone knows its a Christmas tree. The Jews and the Muslims know what it is and they don't care. Can we all please wake up and grow a pair? We still have Santa Claus ride around, but can't mention in writing what holiday he represents? The whole world's gone mad.

Soon after the lighting of the "holiday tree" we have the lighting of the "festive" candles.
How polarizing to our religious community.
It's a Christmas Tree along side the Hanukkah Candles. Don't sully Christmas by referring to it as a holiday tree. We ALL know what it is semantics aside.
