General News: Plan to Stem Water Flow to Hudson St. Home
By Charlie B. Scirbona
The village is making swift progress in dealing with the consistent flooding of a resident’s yard and basement due to runoff from Willis Avenue.
During the Monday village Board of Trustees work session the board discussed a report from Jim Fitzsimmons of Stantec Engineering that described the current drainage issues at the home of Brian Sweeney and his family. Sweeney has been dealing with the drainage issue for around 10 years.
The report explains that Fitzsimmons made two visits to the Sweeney residence in late September and observed the standing water in the Sweeney’s backyard as well as conditions in the basement of the house. Sweeney has explained that any time a medium to heavy rain hits, water pools in his back yard and also flows from Willis Avenue into his driveway and down into his basement.
The report suggests installing two more perforated drain pipes in the easement in the Sweeney’s backyard to better deal with the standing water. The report also suggests increasing the curb reveal to prevent water from flowing down the street and onto the driveway.
The Sweeneys were at Monday's meeting where they again pleaded their case to the board. Lisa Sweeney explained that she’s had to resort to putting bricks at the end of the driveway to keep the water at bay. She said that the bricks were not a real solution because it meant she or her husband would always have to be at the house incase it started to rain.
Comments:
Please hurry. I have to ride my motorcycle through there nearly every day and it's becoming increasingly dangerous with the constant wet conditions in the area, falling leaves and approaching freezing temperatures. Thank You.

Perhaps it's time to look at the rest of the village too. Since we seem to no longer get a rain storm once in a while but rather a torrent weekly; quite a few of us are dealing with lots of water in our yards and basements. Water from Duncan avenue runs into my yard and eventually gets to the storm drain after it passes over my neighbors lawn. Is this a village issue ? Are there others in this "boat" too?
