General News: Sunny Skies Prevail for RIverfest 2011

With clear skies, calm water and a nice breeze, the volunteers who organized the 14th annual RiverFest couldn’t have asked for a better day Saturday.
Hundreds of people flocked to Donahue Memorial Park to take in the view and enjoy the festivities. Some people were happy to sit under the large tent and take in the live music from bands like the West Point Steel Drum Band and the Studebaker Brown Band.
If sitting in the tent wasn’t someone’s fancy there were vendors selling everything from purses and sunglasses to antiques. Families strolled around the park; some flew kites and took in a magic show. A popular attraction was the antique fire engine from Storm King Engine Company #2, which was running free rides.
However, the real draw was the river itself. While it had been advertised that the sloop the Woody Guthrie would be giving cruises throughout the day it wasn’t to be. According to RiverFest staff the sloop was in for last minute repairs and couldn’t sail.
That didn’t stop people from getting out on the river. Storm King Adventure Tours offered $1 demos for the day. Cara Meling, head guide for SKAT, said the demos were popular.
“We’ve had about 100 people so far,” said Meling shortly after 1 pm. “We get pretty busy at RiverFest.”
The daylong festival also offered festival-goers a chance to meet some of the people involved in local businesses and organizations who put up informational tables and spent the day chatting with passersby. From the Cornwall public library, which is promoting its Geek the Library public awareness program, to the Cornwall Historical Society and businesses like Studio 208, Riverfest offered an opportunity to be part of a community day that brought people to the banks of the Hudson River once again.

Cornwall Public Library had a wonderful day at our booth at RiverFest. Thanks to all who work so hard to make this happen. It was wonderful to meet so many new people and we're looking forward to seeing them at the library soon. We Geek RiverFest!
