General News: Motorcyclist Charged After Evading Police
By Charlie B. Scirbona
A village of Cornwall-on-Hudson resident is facing a charge of reckless driving and 12 speeding tickets after leading a town of Cornwall police on a short chase Saturday.
Daniel Degroat, 20, was arrested on April 9 after Cornwall police Sgt. Philip Sinagra first witnessed Degroat doing 53 MPH in a 30 MPH zone on Quaker Avenue and Degroat refused to pull over.
Sinagra wrote in his police report that when he attempted to pull over the village resident, who was riding a motorcycle, Degroat instead pulled into the right shoulder of the road and began passing vehicles in his way. Sinagra reports that when Degroat came to the intersection with Route 32 he pulled onto the grass and rode through the red light, cutting several other vehicles off in the process.
Degroat continued the chase down Route 32, eventually leading Sinagra up Orrs Mills Road and making a sharp turn onto Beaks Road and down a series of back roads until he rode down a dead end on John’s Street, a private road off Clara Avenue.
The dead end didn’t deter Degroat. When he came to the end of the road, Degroat pulled onto a railroad bed where he laid his motorcycle over twice. Sinagra was able to capture Degroat while chasing him on foot after Degroat turned his motorcycle over the second time, according to his report.
