General News: Cornwall Brings Relief to the World's Hungry

Acting locally to live globally, the St. Thomas church youth group hosted its annual 30-Hour Famine on Friday, April 1 to aid hunger relief. Over 50 students and parents fasted from Thursday evening to Friday midnight, raising concern and cash for World Vision, a global charity that works in over 100 countries and helps nearly 100 million people combat hunger every year.
Combined donations this year totaled over $9500, very nearly meeting the youth group’s goal of $10,000. World Vision reports that every $30 feeds and cares for a child for one month. (Donations are still being accepted online here.)
Four Local Bands Rock through the Night
Close to 200 persons paid to hear four local bands perform on Friday night, with all proceeds benefitting famine relief. Cornwall’s own, Within the Walls, Second Vision, and Rescue Window, together with Washingtonville’s Six Stories Told, blasted their music to the delight of the crowd, while slick multimedia visuals encircled the stage.
Breaking the Fast at Midnight
Following the concert , youth group members held a brief prayer service. Participants then broke their day-and-a-half fast at a simple buffet of mac ‘n cheese, soups, salads, and bread. Prepared and served by parent volunteers, the food was hearty and nothing was wasted.
Theresa Trella, who directs the youth group with her husband, Chuck, expressed thanks to Rev. Bernard Heter, pastor of St. Thomas and Principal Dennis Costello of the church’s school, whose gym was used for the event. Core team members, including Charlie Boucher, Jackie Matza, Sarah Miller, Jim and Molly Niblo, Greg Scharfenberg, Kyle Schroeder, and Chuck and Celine Trella, were indispensable in making the event a huge success.
In-kind donations were gratefully received from Cornwall Farms, Price Chopper, and Step-By-Step Dance Studio.

Ross - thank you for the wonderful write up and for your help. I'd just like to add a big thank you to Bill Schuster and Black Rock Forest for the donation of the gasoline and use of their generator to help power the show. We'd have had real problems without it. Thanks!
