One story dominated the news in Cornwall this year: the near closing of the New York Military Academy (NYMA) and efforts to keep the school in operation. Of the top ten stories of the year, based on the number of unique page views, NYMA was a central theme in three.

The most viewed story of the year was a letter written after NYMA announced it would suspend operations in June. In “Don’t Let It Happen Here,” Mikey Jackson responded to rumors that a group of Hasidic men was trying to buy the 121-acre school and to fears that it could permanently change Cornwall.

The third and fourth most viewed stories also dealt with NYMA, including the deal announced in June to keep the school open and the original announcement made in April that operations would be suspended at the end of the school year.

The story about the arrest of an administrator at another school grabbed the second spot based on the number of people who read the article. Michael Rossi, the principal of Washingtonville high school, has many supporters who rallied to his side after he was charged with having inappropriate contact with a 16-year-old male student. The case is still making its way through the court system.

The tragic death of a 24-year-old Cornwall-on-Hudson man touched many, judging by the high number of people who read the account of the accident that took his life last January.

Two drug busts by Cornwall police also were among the top ten most viewed stories of the year. The arrest of six men in August for allegedly running a heroin mill in a rented house on Quaker Avenue came in at number six, while the seizure of three marijuana fields off Route 9W the same month is number seven.

Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson business grabbed the eighth and ninth spot on the list of the ten most viewed stories of the year. A letter from police officers John Pena and Arthur Terwilliger makes their case for keeping their jobs as the last two full-time officers in the village. They had been told three weeks earlier that their jobs would be eliminated in six months. An account of ethics charges filed by village trustee Douglas Vatter against Mayor Joseph Gross and fellow trustee Barbara Gosda was also of high interest.  Vatter later dropped his charge against trustee Gosda while the charge against the mayor is still pending.

Rounding out the top ten stories of 2010 is one that has no controversy or tragedy, just some of the hometown pride that has long characterized Cornwall. The Memorial Day parade and ceremony highlights made the tenth most-read story of the year.
