Democratic party supporters find out how to volunteer for local campaigns. |
The Orange County Democratic Committee opened its campaign headquarters in Newburgh on Thursday and committee chairman Jonathan Jacobson promised that this electoral season volunteers would make a big push to get out the vote for Democratic candidates for office. He noted that Democrats now outnumber Republicans in Orange County, a historic shift first noted in the last general election.
Jacobson introduced Roxanne Donnery, the Democrat who is challenging Republican state assemblywoman Nancy Calhoun for her seat representing the 96th District. Donnery, who represents Highland Falls and Woodbury in the Orange County legislature ,said that she is putting on the boxing gloves in her fight against Calhoun, who has been in the office for 20 years.
Democratic Chair Faces a Challenger, Too
The day after the opening, fellow Democrat Sandra Sciortino announced her effort to unseat party chair Jacobson, saying that Jacobson, too, has held the position for 20 years and noting that it’s time for change in the committee’s direction.
Democrats vote on September 22 at the Democratic re-organization meeting to determine who will be the next leader of the Orange County Democratic Party.
