General News: CCHS Gets National Recognition
Cornwall Central High School has made it onto the list of the nation’s top high school that is compiled annually by Newsweek magazine. The ranking is based on the percentage of students who took advanced placement college-level courses and tests in the 2008-09 school year.
CCHS ranked 1,508 out of 1,600 schools on the list. James I O’Neill High School in Highland Falls also made the list, with a rank of 1,159. Six percent of the nation’s high schools are included on the list.
Three Cornwall Graduates Headed to Harvard
The recognition of the school’s advanced placement curriculum comes as three CCHS seniors -- Angela Frankel, Adrian LaChance and Rachael Zsido -- make plans to attend Harvard University in the fall, a significant number from any one school to be accepted by the Ivy League institution. Two students will also be attending Cornell University, another Ivy League school, and the class valedictorian, Gabrielle Favorito, will be going to American University.
Cornwall schools superintendent Timothy Rehm says that it’s “quite a tribute” to the district that three students have been accepted to Harvard out of a total of six students throughout the Hudson Valley region. He is also pleased with the Newsweek ranking and to see the students and the district “being recognized and doing so well in an extremely competitive market.”
