General News: Cornwall Teens Win Bridge Design Awards
|
The winners (from l. to r.): Seniors Myles Billard and Josh Hawthorne-Madell and juniors Sean Casey and Bobby Flitsch. |
Many people can design a bridge on a computer, but few can design one that could be built on a relatively small budget that is often what it takes to construct one in the real world. On Saturday, four teens from Cornwall Central High School proved that they have some of the top bridge engineering skills in the country.
The teens were members of two bridge designing teams that won the two top awards in a field of 7,000 teams that competed in the West Point Bridge Design Contest.
Team Bebop, seniors Josh Hawthorne-Madell and Myles Billard, won first place with two bridge designs with a combined cost of $495,984.73. Team Arch Nemeses, juniors Bobby Flitsch and Sean Casey, finished second with a cost of $499,532.04. Each team earned $5,000 scholarships and all the teams went home with beautiful new Dell laptop computers.

Congratulations to these great young students. If anyone read yesterdays Record they would realise what an honour these students have achieved. A real superior accomplishment for them and their teachers.
