General News: Bannerman Castle Crumbles More
|
The recent damage is visible in the tower wall. Photo by Thom Johnson. |
Bannerman Castle lost more of its walls during the intense wind storms earlier this week, according to the Bannerman Castle Trust. As seen in this photo taken by Trust member Thom Johnson on Wednesday, another chunk of the front (south) wall of the tower, including Bannerman's coat of arms, came down. In late December, a large portion of one of the castle's wall completely collapsed.
Trust member Wes Gottlock advises that these observations were made through optical devices from the eastern shore and that the full extent of damage cannot be fully assessed until they can get out to personally survey the island,
Gottlock says the volunteers are continuing their efforts to stabilize the Bannerman residence and to conduct fundraisers. Last week, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer pledged his support to raise funds to preserve the buildings. Gottlock adds that are optimistic about operating tours starting in May and plan to expand the historic gardens on the island as well
Comments:
I am dismayed that this historic site is crumbling. However I am concerned that such valuable dollars will be spent on a cause too far for any reasonable expense to be incurred. Although the site is well known as a tourist destination, I feel that there are other far more public and accessible sites that would benefit from an exhaustive fundraising effort.
