General News: COVAC Attorney Fee Issue Appears Resolved
Complaints about an attorney’s bill for services to the Cornwall Volunteer Ambulance Corps have disappeared following the move by that attorney, Brad Pinsky, to knock $1,000 off his bill.
In November, COVAC treasurer Stephan Wilkinson resigned rather than sign a check for attorney services that included more than $4,000 for the cost of driving from Syracuse to Cornwall to attend meetings on two occasions this fall. While it is not unusual for an attorney to charge for travel time, Wilkinson says that he found the charge “unconscionable” and said he was “baffled” by the claim that the only EMS attorney was 250 miles away, in Syracuse.
“The reason I resigned was because I was unwilling to take the responsibility personally, however that might play out,” Wilkinson said.
COVAC’s new chief, Jack Boyle, explained that the membership had approved spending $10,000 on an attorney specialized in handling EMS affairs because they wanted to get the ball rolling on negotiations that had dragged on for nearly two years.
