General News: Rare Hudson River Paintings On View

Lovers of 19th century paintings from the Hudson River School of Art have a rare opportunity to see more than two dozen of the most celebrated works of these painters who captured the beauty of the region in their work.
From Friday, October 16 through Sunday, October 18, St. John's Episcopal Church of Cornwall, will offer an exclusive exhibition of a privately-held collection featuring the art of Thomas Benjamin Pope, 1834-1891, of Newburgh, NY. The exhibit includes canvases by Clinton Loveridge and Benjamin Champney.
According to historians, Thomas Benjamin Pope was born in New York City or New Jersey in 1834 and moved to Newburgh as a young man. He was a liquor dealer before devoting himself to art in 1854. He developed his natural talents in drawing and painting and soon had a reputation in oils and watercolors, as well as design. Pope enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War and became a 2nd Lieutenant in the 56th New York Volunteers. He was wounded in the valley of the Potomac during the raid by Stuart’s Cavalry.
Following the Civil War, Pope returned to Newburgh. He created a number of still life compositions, but is considered an accomplished landscape artist. His works exemplify the tranquility and clarity associated with the Hudson River School of painting.
Pope’s promising artistic career was tragically cut short in 1891, when he was struck by a train while waiting for the ferry at Fishkill Landing (the former name for the city of Beacon).
Storm King Mountain and Cornwall are the subject of several paintings in the exhibition.
The public is invited to attend two special evening showings with a lecture and a wine & cheese reception on Friday, October 16, and Saturday, October 17, from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. The suggested donation is $25 per person for each evening event, and advanced registration is requested.
The exhibit will also be open on Saturday, October 17, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, and on Sunday, October 18, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, with a suggested donation of $10. For information call 845-534-5475, or visit www.stjohnscornwall.org/.
