General News: Arson Suspected in Cornwall Plaza Fire
Cornwall police and New York State Police are investigating an apparent arson that occurred early Thursday morning at Cornwall Plaza.
Police chief Todd Hazard says that the fire occurred in a vacant office on the second floor of 45 Quaker Avenue. Members of the Cornwall Fire Department, Highland Engine and Mountainville Engine companies responded to the call shortly after midnight and were able to extinguish the fire. A second fire was soon discovered in a different area of the building, according to Cornwall fire chief Patrick Hines, who said the second fire also was put out quickly.
Other businesses in the commercial building were undamaged and they were open Thursday morning, although a yellow tape could be seen around the entrance to the doors leading upstairs at 45 Quaker Avenue.
Chief Hazard says that the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing and no suspects have been named.
