General News: Little League Season Kicks Off

The Cornwall Little League launched its 59th season on Saturday with a parade from town hall to the fields that was led by Ken Cashman, the editor of the Cornwall Local and a sports reporter who is much admired by local athletes.

Hundreds of the 850 boys and girls who are playing little league baseball this year took part in the brief parade, with the youngest t-ball players leading the march as they clutched their team banners. 

As the players filled the major league field, local dignitaries arrived to take part in the celebration, which began with the playing of the national anthem.  Members of the American Legion Post 353 and the Storm King Engine Company color guard presided at the raising of the American flag.

Chaplain Bob Hershberger, a chaplain at the veteran’s hospital and an umpire since the early 1980s, lead the crowd in prayer, saying “It’s time to play ball, oh God.”

Little League president John Carnright acknowledged the commitment of some two dozen officers and volunteers who make the little league possible each year and welcomed the elected officials who came to be part of opening day.. Carnright also who noted that editor Cashman is quite certainly the only former Monroe-Woodbury Little League president who has ever led a parade in Cornwall.

Cornwall town supervisor Kevin Quigley made some brief remarks and Orange County legislator Alan Seidman reminded the crowd not to forget those serving in the armed forces.  State representative Nancy Calhoun was represented by her assistant, Mary Ann Rose O’Dell, who presented the league with a resolution to mark its 59th year.

The 2008 District 19 champions – including three softball teams and two baseball teams-- presented their banners to the League president and the five young players threw out the first pitches of the game. 

The ceremony ended quickly and a few of the lucky players headed to the fields to kick up the dust and have some fun in the first games of the new season.
