General News: Wine Sales In Groceries Dropped
|
Kenn Brodmerkel gathered signatures on a petition opposing the sale of wine in groceries stores. |
Cornwall Wines shop owner Kenn Brodmerkel sounded elated on Monday after he learned that New York state had dropped its initiative to allow the sale of wine in grocery stores. It was not included in the state’s proposed budget unveiled on Monday.
Brodmerkel was celebrating the victory of a coalition of groups including wine stores, wineries, law enforcement and anti-drunk driving organizations that fought the proposal. As part of the wine shop owners group, Brodmerkel lobbied state officials in Albany and provided hundreds of names on a petition that he gathered in his Cornwall Plaza store.
He says that he was surprised by the intensity of people’s support for his campaign against the measure, but he wasn’t surprised that it was defeated. He attributed the defeat to the fact that after the initial licensing of grocery stores, not much revenue would be generated for the state.
“After the first year, the measure would have caused more jobs to be lost,” Brodmerkel said in a phone interview. “The wineries argued that they would go out of business and they carry a lot of weight because of tourism and eco-tourism.”
Brodmerkel sent out a special notice to his customers on Monday thanking them for their support and announced that he will be uncorking a special wine sale starting this weekend.
