General News: Library Trustees Approve New Budget
The Cornwall public library board of trustees has approved a new $900,00 budget that will be submitted to the voters on April 21, 2009.
The 2009-10 operating budget is 4.31 percent larger than the library’s current budget and will be funded largely from tax revenue from residents of the Cornwall Central School District.
According to the library, more than half of the proposed budget will be spent on salaries and benefits for the library staff. Building operations account of $110,000 of the spending and $106,000 is proposed for new books, reference items, subscriptions and DVDs.
The library reports that computer usage went up 22% in the past year and more than 157,000 books, Cds and DVDs, were taken out by library patrons.
Also on this year’s library ballot will be an open seat on its board of trustees. Board president Christine McDonald is stepping down at the end of her five-year term and nominations are being accepted now to fill her spot. Twenty-five signatures are required for a candidate’s name to appear on the ballot. So far, two people have thrown their hats into the ring: Susanne C. Vondrak, a resident of Cornwall-on-Hudson; and Marilyn Klein, a Cornwall resident.
