General News: St. Thomas Takes Home Banner
|
St. Thomas varsity players celebrate their victory. |
By Christine Staudle
It's March and the St. Thomas of Canterbury basketball season is coming to an end. The OCPSL playoffs have begun and the Banner game has been played.
The St. Thomas varsity boys won the 2008-2009 Orange County Parochial School League Banner for the first time in four years and the second time in school history! The banner game is the best of the east vs. the best of the west.
These top-seeded teams met at Burke Catholic HS Sunday night and St. Thomas defeated St. Joseph Middletown, 60-37. Connor Staudle was the leading scorer of the night and an impressive collective effort was put forth by all.
The varsity boys are the #3 seed starting the playoffs against Sacred Heart of Newburgh @ 2:30pm this Saturday March 7th at St. Joseph's in Middletown. The winner advances to Burke Catholic on March 8th against a winner TBD.
The junior varsity boys won their second playoff game against St. Joe’s of New Windsor 46 - 45. A well-balanced offense was led by Michael Robinson, Matt Bosse, and Brendan Quinn with 16, 11, and 10 points respectively. Anthony LaRegina controlled the offense with 10 assists, 8 rebounds, 5 steals and 5 points. St. Thomas plays St. Stephen’s March 7th at Sacred Heart Newburgh.
