General News: Cornwall Man is Flamenco Musician
|
Greg Melnick will play flamenco guitar this Saturday night. |
By Lois Hicks-Wozniak
On Saturday, January 17, the staccato beat of flamenco music will be heard at St. John’s Episopal Church when Greg Melnick performs as part of the church’s sesquicentennial “The Celebration Series.” Melnick, a Flamenco guitarist, is a 30-year resident of Cornwall, New York, having graduated from Cornwall High School’s class of 1990.
Greg began studying Flamenco guitar in New York City in 2004, then traveled to Spain in 2006 -- visiting the region of Andalusia and the cities of Malaga, Seville, Jerez de Frontera and Cordoba – for intensive study and immersion into the Flamenco genre.
Flamenco, a Spanish art form with its origins in the Andalusia region, encompasses three main aspects: the Flamenco guitar or Toque, an expressive style of guitar playing featuring many percussive techniques such as Golpe or finger tapping on the guitar soundboard, articulated plucking, strumming and tremelos; the Cante, or song and Baile, the improvisatory dance which may employ rhythmic heel strikes, use of castanets and finger snaps with expressive arm motion.
Renowned in the Hudson Valley, Melnick has performed at Vino100, Ann Street Gallery and Café Macchiato in Newburgh, NY; Caliente of Central Valley and Pisces, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. He currently performs weekends at Castillo Español in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. When he’s not strumming his guitar, Melnik works in marine canvas restoration and repair. He can be contacted at [email protected].
