General News: Ice Storm Causes Power Outages

Power outages in areas of Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson have some residents wondering how long they will have to wait to get back their electricity and heat. An ice and rain storm overnight left thousands of Hudson Highlands residents without power and Central Hudson crews are repairing high priority outages first.
Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson police and highway departments were busy most of Thursday night during the wintry storm that quickly turned to ice in the higher elevations of the area, knocking down trees and power lines.
Cornwall-on-Hudson police chief Charles Williams said that his officers were out most of the night with crews from the Department of Public Works, removing trees and debris from Route 9W, Mountain Road, Deer Hill Road and Maple Road. As of 9 a.m. on Friday, parts of Maple Road and Deer Hill Road were impassable and residents there were without power. All other roads were open.
Similarly, Cornwall police report calls of trees downs and power lost in the area of Mineral Springs and Angola Road.
Cornwall schools were put on a two-hour delay at 5:30 a.m. then closed for the day two hours later.
By 11 a.m., the sun had emerged and temperatures were in the mid-to-high 30s but ice still clung to the mountains. Storm King School, which was still without power on Friday afternoon, cancelled the Canterbury concert and craft fair planned for Saturday and Sunday.
Comments:
The Idlewild Creek Senior Apartment complex off Continental Road on Landmark Drive also lost electricity from 10 p.m. Thursday until 6:15 p.m. on Friday. The backup lighting in the main building is only designed to last 3 hours. The apartments have only electric heat and stoves, so it was cold as well as dark until power was restored.
