General News: Final Tally GIve Obama Small Lead
The final results of the November 4, 2008 election in Cornwall, including absentee ballots, put president-elect Barack Obama slightly ahead of his opponent John McCain by a total vote of 3,424 to 3,334. The percentage breakdown is 50.7% for Obama/Biden and 49.3% for McCain/Palin.
Early results had given the lead locally to McCain, with 3,168 votes, over Obama, with 3,131 votes. (See early results here)
More than 300 absentee ballots from voters in Cornwall, Cornwall-on-Hudson and Mountainville were counted last week.
Among the write-in votes, former Cornwall Local editor Margaret Menge, who left her position and the area last spring, received one vote for the 96th District State Assembly seat. Dutchess County legislator Joel Tyner received two votes: one for the 19th District Congressional seat and one for the 96th District State Assembly seat. Matthew Keller also received one vote for the assembly seat.
