General News: Local Woman Named Rising Star

Stella Quinn, the coordinator of the Cornwall Community Co-op, was recognized as a 2008 Rising Star by the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, Junior League and Leadership Orange on Wednesday. The award is presented annually to people between the ages of 21 and 40 who are up and coming leaders in their professional and volunteer lives.
Stella was named a Rising Star for her work with the food co-op and for her dedication to bringing agricultural awareness and local food sustainability to the area.
Born in Ireland, Quinn moved to Cornwall-on-Hudson with her family when she was 11 and graduated from Cornwall high school. She received a BA from SUNY New Paltz and has worked with several farms in Orange and Ulster County, as well as in New Zealand and Iceland.
As coordinator of the Cornwall Community Co-op, Quinn has worked with other volunteers to lay the groundwork for the new organization. The co-op has signed up 75 new members since launching its membership drive earlier this month. Plans are on tap for opening a food co-op market in the summer of 2009.
