General News: D.A.R.E. Program Future Uncertain

D.A.R.E. Officer Patsalos is stepping down.
D.A.R.E. Officer Patsalos is stepping down.
Cornwall’s D.A.R.E. officer George Patsolas is resigning from the police department for personal reasons and police chief Todd Hazard says he doesn’t forsee training a new officer in the D.A.R.E. program.  D.A.R.E. stands for Drug Awareness Resistance Education and officer Patsolas has taught the program to sixth grade students at Cornwall Middle School since February 2007.

Hazard says that the state of New York no longer supports the program and has stopped supplying the workbooks necessary for the D.A.R.E. training.  He said he was notified on the change this summer.

It is unclear whether a new drug awareness training program will be available to replace D.A.R.E., Hazard said.
