What makes the center of Cornwall special for the people who live here? The Orange County Citizens Foundation invites local residents and people from throughout the county to downtown Cornwall to discover what gives this town a sense of place.
On Saturday, October 18, the OCCF’s Placemaking initiative comes to Cornwall, part of a county-wide tour of towns to see what makes each one unique. People from other towns are expected to explore the streets of central Cornwall but, according to OCCF president Nancy Proyect, many of those who benefit from the tour are people who already live here who re-discover what makes their home special.
This Saturday, town supervisor Kevin Quigley will welcome people to the placemaking tour, which starts at 10 a.m. at Woody’s All-Natural restaurant on Quaker Avenue. Town board member Mary Beth Greene Krafft will help lead the group as it walks down Main Street. Town planner Ed Garling will talk about the historical significance of buildings while others will address ideas about how Cornwall could change in the coming years.
Nancy Proyect says the morning walk through town could help residents think differently about where they live. “ The goal is to let communities decide, to help them understand that making places, creating communities is important to the future of our towns and villages,” she says.
Proyect says a placemaking tour often stimulates change. “The tour can motivate citizens to express what they want,” she says, “in many of these movements, it is not the government that motivates, but the citizens themselves.”
