General News: Music on a Summer Afternoon

Dozens of young people came to the riverfront for the debut of L’Aissez Music Faire on Saturday at Donahue Memorial Park in Cornwall-on-Hudson.
Seven bands from Orange County entertained the crowd from the gazebo that had been transformed into a stage for the afternoon. After all the bands had performed their numbers, the stage opened up for other musicians to bring up their instruments and jam, creating a moment of unfettered creativity against a backdrop of the rolling Hudson River.
The music faire was put together by Cornwall-on-Hudson trustee Rick Gioia and his son, Zack, along with a handful of teens and parents who wanted to create a place where the young musicians could share their love of music. A simple concession stand featuring pizza, cookie, apples and iced tea provided refreshments and for a modest fee, people could create their own tie-dyed t-shirts at a table nearby.
At least three village patrol cars were parked near the venue, but neither parking or crowd control ever became an issue. The crowd never was larger than 100 people and many of the teens could be seen walking down to the river for the concert and walking back to the village again.
Looking back at the event, trustee Gioia said he was pleased with the way the day came off. “It wasn’t supposed to be this real produced, slick thing,” Gioia said. “Everyone who contributed was village-based, Village Pizza, 2 Alices, and mostly village kids who ran the show.”
