General News: Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea
If you were down at the riverfront on Tuesday, you may have gotten a glimpse of an amazing flotilla of boats that looked like floating junk heaps. The Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea, however, are part of an artist’s project to build boats out of scrap wood and recycled materials then sail them down the Hudson River powered by alternative energy sources.
The Swimming Cities flotilla launched from Troy, New York, on August 15, and is stopping at riverfront communities to put on performances by the crew members. The Brooklyn artist Swoon came up with the idea for the project, which she developed with the playwright Lisa D’Amour, circus composer Sxip Shirey, Kinetic Steam Works and the band Dark Dark Dark.
Cornwall-on-Hudson resident Kris Seiz, who is often on the river in her role as director of Storm King Adventure Tours, caught up with the Swimming Cities vessels as they approached the Bear Mountain Bridge on Tuesday and took these photos. Comments:
The website is actually SwitchBackSea.com. This was an incredible project that these volunteers did to bring attention to the recycling issue. I only hope they will do it again in 2009 for the 400th Hudson-Fulton Celebration! Maybe they will make Cornwall-on-Hudson a destination now that we have those wonderful docks!
