General News: Early Morning Garbage Pick Ups Back On
Following an accident that seriously injured an employee of the village Department of Public Works, the department plans to make a small change in its garbage pick-up schedule.
For the past six years, DPW trucks have driven by five commercial sites and one residential street in its early morning pickup route. That policy was enacted following complaints about the noise made by the trucks as they backed up in the hours before 7 a.m.
Dave Halvorsen, the head of DPW, asked the village for the power to change that policy and the board approved his request.
One of the problems, Halvorsen said, was that the old policy didn’t allow trucks to pick up garbage on Maple Avenue until after 7 a.m. He said his drivers are now more concerned than ever about pedestrian safety, especially on Maple Avenue that intersects with Hudson Street in front of the elementary school.
The village board also noted that the trucks were wasting energy when they drove by the commercial locations on Hudson and Idlewlld and had to return later to pick up the trash.
The locations affected by the change, in addition to Maple Avenue, are Painter’s restaurant, Market-on-Hudson, the apartment house across from the Market, the building where GHS Jewelers is located and the Storm King Theatre building.
