General News: All-Star Minor Softball Team Takes Two
By Andy Reed
Game 1: Cornwall – 12, Otisville – 0:
The 9-10 girls’ softball all stars took on Otisville on Tuesday, July 8th. It was the first game for each team. The Cornwall ladies put up six runs in the first inning with good hustle and heads up baserunning. With six runs in the bottom of the third inning, and a one-two-three top of the fourth for Otisville, the girls won 12 – 0 with the mercy rule.
Colleen Hogan pitched a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts in four innings. Madison Crowley and Patty Darcy each had two hits and three RBI. Kaitlyn Priess and Samantha Nelbach each scored twice. Dani Incantalupo had two hits, and Kaitlyn Murphy, who is currently out due to an injury, was key to keeping the girls running from her first base coach’s box.
Game 2: Cornwall – 18, New Windsor – 12:
The 9-10 all stars played Wednesday, July 9th in Middletown, taking on New Windsor in the second round of the District 19 playoffs. The girls put up two runs in the first inning and four runs in the second inning. Samantha Railey was doing a great job keeping New Windsor off the board. New Windsor stormed back to tie the game at six all after two innings.
After trading zeroes in the third inning, Cornwall scored four times in the fourth, and four times in the fifth, to take a 14 – 8 lead into the bottom of the inning. Caitlyn Hall was keeping the opponents guessing on the mound.
Once again the New Windsor came back to make it 14 – 11 after the fifth. Our girls put up four more runs in the top of the 6th to take an 18 – 11 into the bottom of the last inning. With Sami Reed on the mound, New Windsor put runners on first and third with no outs. The next batter lined into a double play and a strikeout closed the game for the Dragons.
Patty Darcy went five for five including a home run, and Lauren Wheeler scored three times. Taryn Malone and Lauren Pinkham scored twice for the winners. The only regret the girls had was that with the late start and the long game (the last out was after 9 PM), the coaches, Dan Hogan, Don Priess, and Kevin Darcy, would not let them go honking through town.
The girls play again Thursday, July 10th against Minisink Valley at 5:30.
